IC6 student runs for charity

07/07/11

IC6 student Keith Ly has just completed an ultra-marathon to raise money for the Japanese Tsunami Earthquake Appeal. The run circumnavigated the whole London Underground Network, approximately 275 miles long, with an aim to raise £10,000 (approx. ¥1.35million). This had never been attempted or completed before.

Keith began the run on Friday at 1pm at Chesham Station, Buckinghamshire, and finished on Tuesday at 5.29pm at Victoria Station, London. His friend Ian Tang was running with him but unfortunately dropped out after 19 hours due to an injury.

The distance included all the twenty-six boroughs of London, the City of London, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Essex and Surrey which are covered by London Underground. Keith ran the distance in 5 days, in stretches of up to 24 hours.

Keith found the Japanese Tsunami Disaster in March very close to home and decided he had to do something help them. He has never taken part in an official marathon before but completed a previous charity event last year where he ran 100km for the Haiti earthquake (http://www.justgiving.com/CambridgetoLondonforHaitirun)

A world record attempt was submitted to the Guinness World Records for verification but sadly the organisation decided not take it any further as they believed the run was impossible! We are glad Keith proved them wrong. Despite keeping a record of the time he arrived at each underground station and taking photographs along the way, this will have to remain an unofficial world record.

Keith was lucky to have nice weather on his side until the last stretch to Victoria Station (the 272nd stop) where it rained. He met many interesting people along the way who have inspired him to continue raising money for those in need.

IC6 is very proud of his incredible achievement and urges people to donate to this worthy cause.

You can donate money through the Tube360 website, which was set up for the event, here: http://www.circumnavigatetube360.co.uk/#/donations/4540560131
