Course Outline

18 units - equivalent to 3 A-levels

This course is for students who are interested in a career in areas such as Registered Care Homes, Community Work, Social Work, Probation Services or Voluntary Work. The course is the equivalent to 3 A-levels and gives you the skills you need to work in these fields or go on to a degree programme in a related subject. The course combines practical skills with Care theory.

Course Structure

You will have the opportunity to study the following 9 compulsory core units:
• Equality, diversity and rights in care Work
• Communication & supportive skills for care work
• Research for care
• Applying sociology
• Vocational practice
• Protecting self and others
• Applying psychology
• Personal and professional development

During the second year of the programme students will study a further 9 optional units in Care.  You will also have Literacy and Numeracy embedded into the course to supplement your studies. There will be periods of work experience for students.  These are an essential part of the course which must be completed satisfactorily. 

Entry Requirements

At least 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English or Mathematics and at least a B grade in a related GCSE or a Merit grade in A Level 2 vocational qualification. It would be preferable if you had some work experience in the Health or Care industry.

Assessment

There will be continuous assessment using methods that include: assignments, role plays and course work.

Progression

The course provides a broad educational basis for further training, further education or for moving into appropriate employment within the health and social care sector. If you wish to enter one of the professions such as nursing, midwifery or social work you would need to continue your studies to degree level.
