Course Outline

  • Applied A Level Double Award - equivalent to 2 A Levels
  • Applied A Level Single Award  - equivalent to 1 A Level

This course offers you opportunities to actively experience the scientific environment through coursework, links with local employers, case studies and research.

You will be able to develop your understanding of scientific ideas and the skills that scientists need to be effective in their work, the nature of science-based work and the social, economic and environmental impact science has in society. You will have the opportunity to become skillful in carrying out practical techniques and following procedures and to acquire investigation and problem solving skills.

Course Structure

Units studied in the AS course are chemistry, cell biology, forensics and human biology.

·         Science at work

·         Analysis at work

·         Monitoring the activity of the human body

·         Cells and molecules

·         Chemicals for a purpose

·         Forensic science

In the A2 course students carry out a longer investigation of their own choice.  They also study:

·         Sampling, testing and processing

·         Synthesising organic chemicals

·         The mind and the brain

·         Applications of biotechnology

·         Working waves

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade C or above and at least a B grade in Double Science.

Assessment

Assessment is 33% externally tested and 67% coursework.

Progression

The course will prepare you to enter a variety of science or science-related degree level courses. You can also use this qualification to complement other vocational courses.
