Applied Art and Design

Course Outline
- Applied A Level Double Award - equivalent to 2 A Levels
- Applied A Level Single Award - equivalent to 1 A Level
This course is designed for students who want to pursue a career in Art and/or Design. It will give you the opportunity to acquire creative skills, to develop your understanding of the principals of art and design and how they are applied in practice and see how different creative areas are inter-related and influence each other.
Your communications, number and ICT skills are expected to continue to develop throughout the course.
Course Structure
6 units in General Art, Design and Technology skills including: drawing, painting, digital imaging, sculpture, wood, metal, plastics, textiles, graphics and CAD/CAM (normally one year).
6 units in a specialist area chosen by the student, you will follow a pathway of your choice based on the options above (taken in second year of study).
Entry Requirements
5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including English, Mathematics, Art or Design and Technology at a minimum of a Grade B.
Assessment
Whilst assessment is on-going, there are two externally tested projects which take the place of exams.
Progression
The course will give you a wide choice of progression options into university or relevant employment. Successfully completing the course will equip you to move onto degrees or BTEC Higher National Diplomas.
Possible career routes include product design, graphics, interior design, furniture, architecture, ICT based design (Including computer graphics and game design), fashion, textiles, costume, theatre, film, or fine art.
Pre-course reading or preparation
It may be desirable to read up on a particular artist or designer and write a brief synopsis.
In the case of students who have not achieved all required results, a portfolio of Art or Design work may be required.
